Resilient Cities Workshop” Started in Yalova

Experts gathered in Yalova for the “Resilient Cities Workshop” to discuss topics such as natural disasters, smart cities, war and migration, economy and society, health, environment, and climate change.

Organized by the Yalova City Council, the opening session of the “Resilient Cities Workshop” was held with high attendance. Participants included Yalova Governor Muammer Erol, Member of Parliament Ahmet Büyükgümüş, Deputy Mayor Mustafa Tutuk, Yalova University Rector Prof. Dr. Mehmet Bahçekapılı, Vice Rectors Prof. Dr. Vefik Arıca and Prof. Dr. Senay Yürür Karslıoğlu, Yalova Police Chief Göksel Topaloğlu, President of the Yalova Provincial Assembly Hasan Soygüzel, President of Yalova City Council Mustafa Kandemir, provincial directors, academicians from Yalova University, and representatives from civil society organizations.

“This Workshop is Very Important for Today and the Future”

In his opening speech, Yalova University Rector Prof. Dr. Mehmet Bahçekapılı described the city as a living organism and pointed out many factors threatening it, including natural disasters, epidemics, and human-related causes. He emphasized that “we must consider these factors when designing our cities” and highlighted the importance of this workshop both for today’s and tomorrow’s cities.

In the first session, Yalova University Faculty of Medicine Founding Dean and Vice Rector Prof. Dr. Vefik Arıca shared information about epidemic diseases, while Assoc. Prof. Dr. Baki Demirel from the Faculty of Economics and Administrative Sciences expressed his views on “Urban Economy” and made recommendations for successfully creating “Resilient Cities.”

In the second session, moderated by lawyer Cüneyd Altıparmak, Prof. Dr. Erman Coşkun from İzmir Bakırçay University’s Management and Information Systems department gave a presentation on Smart Cities, while Assoc. Prof. Dr. Salih Batal from Yalova University shared insights on Urban and Regional Planning.

After the Q&A session, plaques and gifts were presented to the speakers.

The workshop, which will continue for two days, will bring together experts to prepare scientific reports on topics including urban planning, natural disasters, smart cities and governance, war and migration, economy and society, health, environment, and climate change.
